Ethnomusicology Cohort Information:
The first cohort will lay the foundation for studying ethnomusicology in relation to worship and witness with particular attention to cultural music and the arts by drawing from the disciplines of ethnomusicology, missiology, biblical theology,and Christian spirituality.
Cohort Professor: Dr. Roberta King, Associate Professor of Communication and Ethnomusicology
Roberta R. King, Ph.D., taught at Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya for twenty-two years where she
introduced studies in Christian Music Communication. A missionary pioneer in ethnomusicology with
World Venture, Roberta has ministered extensively across Africa and parts of Asia. Dr. King oversees
and teaches in the Global Christian Worship (Ethnomusicology) program where students grapple with
issues in music, culture, and the church in cross-cultural worship and witness. Her publications include,
“Toward a Discipline of Christian Ethnomusicology: A Missiological Paradigm” in Missiology, plus two forthcoming publications: Pathways in Christian Music Communication: The Case of the Senufo of Côte d’Ivoire in the ASM Scholarly Monograph Series and Music in the Life of the African Church written in collaboration with James Krabill, Jean Kidula, and Thomas Oduro published with Baylor University Press.
