            “According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2002 Hispanics living with AIDS accounted for more than 20% of all people living with AIDS even though the Hispanic population is only 14% of the country’s population.” This statistic is often cited by Reverend Luis Cortés, Jr. the president of Esperanza USA (www.esperanza.us ).  Joining with others, such as three-time Grammy Award-winning Christian singer Marcos Witt and his CanZion group, Esperanza USA hopes to educate not only the faith-based community but the Latino community at-large on HIV/AIDS, through the release of the film No Te Rindas.  Since the latter part of 2006 when it premiered, the film and it’s accompanying study guide entitled “Todos estamos en la lucha” (“We Are All in the Fight Together”) have been introduced to Latino pastors and church leaders (including many in the Covenant) in key cities with large Latino populations such as Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, New York and Tampa.

            No te rindas (Don’t Give Up) is a short Spanish-language film (English subtitles are provided) dramatizing not only how a Latino family deals with their HIV/AIDS status, but more importantly how their church grows into appropriate and compassionate understanding, service and ministry to such people in need. Despite the predictable plot, occasionally stiff acting, and low-budget visuals, this film serves as a call to action for Christian communities not to ignore the growing number of Latinos infected with HIV/AIDS. The DVD “bonus material” which includes testimonials, statistics and music are as valuable as the movie itself. The DVD and study guide are useful resources for our churches—Latino or otherwise—who seek to serve Latinos in their communities who have been impacted by this disease.             We usually reserve our Companion film column for the “best” movies we’ve seen. No te rindas  is a different kind of “best.” Given the magnitude of the HIV/AIDS problem domestically and globally, and the great need for appropriate education within the Latino Christian community, we wanted to add our voices in promoting this film. Copy our column this month and give it to the Latino pastors, work colleagues, and friends in your midst. 

            “Según  el Centro para el Control de Enfermedades, en el año 2002 los hispanos viviendo con SIDA hacían más del 20% de toda la gente viviendo con SIDA, aunque los hispanos fueran sólo el 14% de la población del País.” Estas estadísticas son citadas con frecuencia por el Reverendo Luis Cortés, Jr. el presidente de Esperanza USA (www.esperanza.us ).  En colaboración con otras personalidades, tales como el tres veces ganador de los Premios Grammy, el cantante cristiano Marcos Witt y su grupo CanZion, Esperanza USA espera educar no sólo a la comunidad de fe, sino también al público en general sobre asuntos relacionados con el VIH/SIDA, mediante el lanzamiento de la película No Te Rindas.  Desde fines del 2006 tanto la película como la guía de estudio que la acompaña “Todos estamos en la lucha” (“We Are All in the Fight Together”) han sido introducidas a pastores latinos y líderes de iglesias (incluyendo muchos en el Pacto) en ciudades claves con poblaciones latinas numerosas como Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, New York y Tampa.

            No te rindas es una película en español de corto metraje (con subtítulos en ingles) que dramatiza no sólo cómo una familia Latina lucha desde su condición de afectada por el VIH/SIDA sino, sobre todo, cómo su iglesia crece en una comprensión apropiada y compasiva de la enfermedad y en el servicio y ministerio a personas en necesidad. A pesar de la trama predecible, de algunas actuaciones un poco rígidas, y de efectos especiales de bajo costo, la película sirve como una llamada a la acción para que las comunidades cristianas no ignoren el número creciente de latinos infectados por el VIH/SIDA. Los “materiales extras” en el DVD, que incluyen testimonios, estadísticas y música, son tan valiosos como la misma película. El DVD y su guía de estudio son recursos útiles para nuestras iglesias –latinas o de otras etnias— que buscan servir a los latinos en sus comunidades que han sido impactadas por esta enfermedad.             Generalmente nos reservamos nuestra columna sobre películas en el Covenant Companion para las “mejores” películas que hemos visto. No te rindas es un tipo diferente de “mejor” película. Dada la magnitud del VIH/SIDA en el país y en el mundo, y la gran necesidad de una apropiada educación dentro de la comunidad cristiana latina, queremos añadir nuestras voces para promover esta película.
